could this be yet another case of Naropa and white guilt?

it's hard to express how amazing this performance was (and not just because i had a piece in it)...these actors/ dancers had two weeks to create 10-12 minute pieces out of the work selected for them/ they selected...that entailed memorization, choreography, space concerns, music, lighting, staging, rehersals, execution...every piece was (as far as i could discern) flawless, beautiful, elegant, professional, engaging...hands down the best event i've atended at Naropa in my two year tenure...

my piece "Said The Moth," beautifully interpreted by Perry Morgan-Hall and Johanna Walker as a dance/ audience interactive poem, was executed using placards, ballet, experimental dance and call and response..a piece that takes at most 45 seconds to read from the page was realized into an amazing 12 minute phantasmagoria...using the audience to disect/ remove the lines from the "voices" speaking said lines, Perry and Johanna utilized a tape recorder to involve the audience's voice...they held placards up, the audience read the lines, they recorded the audience reading the lines (all flawless, all part of the performance, all directions given as part of the performance, never speaking a word that wasn't in my poem), then the cresendo...the tape was played back over the PA while the actors continued their performace of dance and voice...a strange experience being the author...a cacophony of strangers recorded reading your poem to the choreography of trained actors...i loved it and was infinitly impressed...

after the performace the chair of the MFA In Contemporary Performance, Wendell Beavers, invited the poets and actors up for a Q & A...a warm 30 minute conversation insued between audience/ poets/ actors/ directors...this was a true collaborative experience...we all concluded that these two MFA programs need to work together in the future...and the chairs of the programs concurred that they will...

    friday!

so Susana over at Dusie took a bunch of poems for the next issue...which rocks! but this issue is going to be a little different...she compiled a list of 35 willing participants to partake in the first annual e-book/ print chapbook trade off...so, each of the 35 poets has a list of the other 34 participant's addresses...each poet is going to make/ print a chapbook (50 copies) replete with Dusie insignia for title page and back cover, and mail it off to the other Dusie poets...so, each of us can expect 34 chapbooks in the mail over the next 2 months! a barrage of new handmade books from some of my favorite poets from all over the country (and Japan!)! plus the books will all be published/ archived on the Dusie site as the next issue...i think Susana has come up with one of the coolest ideas in e-poetry publishing yet...go Susana!

    Good Morning everyone...

fashion? i'm only biting off Stephanie anyway...

i think Stephanie pioneered this whole fashion and poetry blog thing...but instead of just lazily posting pictures, she actually constructs prose about the things she sees and likes...fashion note taker?

what are the ethics behind stealing a flickr friends photos to post on your blog...these two photos are by Stephanie...that i stole from her blog...i don't know whose legs those "boots" and leg warmers belong to, but what a rad picture...i think my baby sitter Mary-Anne used to sport white leg warmers...

    fashion...

looking at my remark a few posts down about how poet's generally lack fashion sense...realizing that's total bullshit (at least as it applies to the Pacific poets)...SF poets are some of the most fashion savy peeps around (i can't speak to NY/ CHI/ LA or Buffalo)...i like clothes, i know stephanie likes clothes, brandon more and more (god bless white male poet) likes clothes, Suzanne Stein is always fitted to the 9's, AND i've seen her do a handstand while giving a reading at BB's Zeal reading series, alli certainly looks like she likes clothes, i like LRSN when he wears basketball jerseys, nicoloff has awsome hair, taylor brady is perpetually in some shiny dress shirt as is Del Ray Cross, bill luoma usually sports some kind of interesting pair of shoes (or am i thinking of taylor again?), armand cappo most definitly likes clothes (my friend sara even asked Cappo for an interview for a doc she was making about fashion)...though not SF'ers, related, jessica and lorraine have been blogging/ comment boxing (KO'd!) about the theraputic benifits of shopping...i'm a self admitted shoe-whore/ jean-whore...so, i like the fashion sense of my west coast bretheren...go left coast fashionistas!

Stephanie asked me to make her a Bay Area hip hop mix for the Bay Poetics anthology release party...flattered...i have about 5 cd's worth of songs so far...unfortunatly most of my Bay hip hop is on vinyl (well, most of my music is on vinyl proper...but i think we'll make do)...wondering if lyrics like "MURDER MURDER MURDER MOTHERFUCKER!!!" are a bit harsh for an anthology reception...knowing Stephanie probably not...i'm trying to get a nice mixture of hood-hop and backpacker rap going...you know, Saafir next to Restiform Bodies...Spice 1 next to Quaanam...Hobo Junction next to Anticon...

the Embodied Poetics performance tonight was amazing, beyond words...but i'll try tomorrow...i'm still hovering on cloud 9...

the Magie's coming the Magie's coming (on friday morning!)...so excited to see her...

watched Coffee And Cigarettes this afternoon...worth renting for the Tom Waits Iggy Pop bit alone...i taped it...so so so good...Iggy is so cute, like a little boy...the RZA GZA Bill Murry bit was pretty good too..."Bill: i know you guys, you're up to no good"..."RZA: up to no good?!"..."Bill: yeah, you're from "The Wu-Tang Clan...you're GZA, the Genius, and you're RZA"..."RZA: other wise knows as?"..."Bill: otherwise knows as Bobby Digital!"...

i want to marry Iggy Pop..."Iggy: call me Jim, or call me Iggy, my friends call my jimmy, or Jim, or Iggy...call me Iggy..." Tom: okay Jim..."

    ...currently listening to Rush Chornicles...

    Embodied Poetics...

performance is tonight at 7:30 at the Nalanda campus (Black Box Theater)...3 of my poems have been choreographed as some sort of performance piece, i'm not privy to what sort, we'll see tonight...

    coincidently,
  • Zafusy
  • just published one of the poems that will be performed tonight in their 10th issue...

...have your cake and eat it too: yeah, so, Selena and i found a way to go out last night AND meet up with Akilah...cocktails and sushi...Selena's friend works the bar at the sushi joint, so he kept feeding us all sorts of colorful shots chased with Sake...that was fun...he then ordered for us...which was great because whatever he ordered was some of the best sushi i've ever eaten....and i'm a Bay Area kid, we're practically breast fed on sushi (that makes no sense but you get the sentiment)...and then Selena puts down her card to pay and i take out my card and am all "no way, this is your NYU acceptance dinner..." and she's all "no way this is your MFA dinner..." and Ryan (the bartender) is all "neither of you guys are paying...congratulations on your thesis..."...gratis!!!...what a great guy!...amazing dinner...loved it...loved Ryan...amazing Ryan...

afterwards went back to the Catacombs, met up with the birthday party gang...saw Jamba and Erin...i want to hug those two all day...

Mr. And Mrs. Smith- i remember this movie getting trashed...right? i liked it...sort of John Woo meets The Burbs...

    last night...

met up with Kevin Kilroy (MFA Prose 05'/ Naropa) at the Catacombs to celebrate thesis...

soon in walks Sabrina Calle (BA Poetry 06'/ Naropa)

then Jeremiah Bowen (BA Poetry 06'/ Naropa)

then Adam Barker (MFA Prose 06'/ Naropa)

lot's and lot's of drinks and silliness ensues...lot's of talk about MTV's The Real World...lot's of talk about movies (Jeremiah wants to write a script about Jack Spicer...i told him Ron Howard's little brother would be perfect for the role)...lot's of talk (by me and Sabrina) about fashion and how most poets we know lack it "dude, he was rockin' jean shorts and white socks!!!"...Adam and i trying to convince Kevin that Neil Gaiman's The Sandman is some of the best contemporary mythology out there...lot's of talk about Charlie Kaufman and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Sabrina used to work for Hoffman, he just offered her another job in NYC...i'm like "can you hook my up too?"...)

last night was amazing...seriously, one of the best spent evenings i've had in Boulder since i moved here...a really great group of people who haven't gotten together like that in a while...i woke up this morning smiling, refreshed, psychologically replenished...to revert back to my raver days, last night was PLUR...

so, my friend Selena (who tends at the Catacombs) got great news from NYU...she's been accepted to their graduate film program! so tonight we were supposed to go to dinner and drinks to collectively celebrate NYU and thesis...only...i totally forgot about Akilah's birthday...so, i need to call Selena...Selena and i can't seem to catch a break...congratulations Selena, even though we can't be roommates in SF anymore (she also got into SF State's program)...you rock...
